Do you have to wear a life vest while operating a jet boat?
I have a sea doo challenger and I’m not clear on whether I have to wear a life vest while driving….is it in the same category as a jet ski? NJ/NY area
This vessel is classified as a boat, not a personal watercraft. That means you have to follow the laws and regulations regarding boats.
PFD’s (Life Jackets) are mandatory for PWC’s, however for boats the legal requirement stating the age of those who must wear a PFD on a boat goes by the state’s boating laws. Most state requirements require 12 or 14 years of age before wearing them is optional on boats.
If you are new or a beginner to boating, or can’t swim, you should never take that life jacket off until you are at a dock or at shore.
Water is one of the best and most efficient killers of people when it comes to people doing something stupid on or in the water. Always wear your life vest when underway.
